Senior Housing Options
Independent Living to Skilled Nursing Facilities
By: Groshan Fabiola
There are many different types of senior care and housing, ranging from skilled nursing facilities to independent living communities. An independent living center will often provide each resident with their own apartment containing a kitchenette and living room, as well as amenities such as swimming pools and recreation areas just like an apartment or condo building. Other facilities offer medical supervision around the clock to ensure that residents with special healthcare needs are taken care of. You may also want to consider a home healthcare nurse if you want your parent or any other elderly loved one to live with you or on their own, without fear that their health is in danger.
If your loved one needs skilled nursing services, a nursing and rehabilitation home might be the best option. These are large homes that have been licensed to provide custodial care and rehabilitative care such as physical, occupational or speech therapy, and in some cases they also offer social, recreational and spiritual activities. If your loved one is suffering from Alzheimer’s, there are also homes that provide specialized care for their unique needs.
If you don’t want your elderly parent or relative to move but you want to make sure their medical needs are met, a home healthcare nurse might be an option worth considering. These nurses provide care and service to patients in their homes, and they are specially trained for the needs of the home environment that differ largely from that of hospitals and nursing homes. Home healthcare nurses may also provide instructions and guidance to family members on how to deal with the needs of the elderly family member based on their current condition.
An independent living center is another option you might consider if your elderly loved one is in good health. This is basically a residential location that may provide hospitality or supportive services for an additional fee. Be sure to inquire, though, because not all facilities provide the same services. The main benefit for many seniors is having a community of people around that are in the same stage of life, and having assistance there if you should ever need it. Many independent living centers also have social activities and meal services onsite.
With so many options, you and your elderly loved one are sure to find the perfect senior living situation for your unique needs.
